In 1969, OARS became the first exclusively, non-motorized rafting company authorized by the National Park Service to run trips on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. In 1987, Grand Canyon Dories founder and conservationist, Martin Litton, passed the reins to OARS founder, George Wendt, so that he could carry on the dory legacy. Today, OARS & Grand Canyon Dories maintain an ongoing commitment to conservation and responsible travel through unequaled access to more rivers—by raft or dory—than any other organization in the world.

Hi mike, Would love to incorporate a trip on the Colorado river about 7 days within our USA road trip from England We would like to spend 1 night at phantom ranch and the other nights .... who knows .... We are a fit couple in early 70’s are we too old ??? Like walking, but possibly not hiking. So I think reading most itineraries would need to join possibly up or is it down river . Any advice would be greatly appreciated Looking to travel September 2019 Margaret Burton

Hello Margaret. I think to stay a night at Phantom Ranch you would have to hike or take a mule ride from the Grand Canyon Rim down to the Ranch and then join a raft trip going down river. The hike down is not too bad if you take it slow and steady. If you want to join a lower canyon raft trip at Phantom Ranch you will probably have to carry your clothing down with you. There may be ways to have your personal gear transported down to the Ranch - I don’t know. The raft company will arrange your transport out of the Canyon. I would recommend you begin checking availability at the Ranch and raft trips right away. It is not too early as they book up quickly. OARS is one of many rafting companies you could contact. Trying to coordinate availability of an overnight stay at the Ranch with availability on a lower canyon raft trip may prove challenging. We had to book about 18 months in advance to get the raft trip we wanted. Both Phantom Ranch and a lower canyon raft trip are fantastic experiences. I hope you get to enjoy them when you are here. Best of luck. Mike
