Cannondale, UT, KOA is an ideal location. The campground offers full amenities, hillside campsites for tents, nice outdoor kitchen shelter for any adverse weather. Dispersed camping is also available in the area on public lands. Bryce Canyon campgrounds will be full during the busy summer season. Check my review for Cannondale, UT, KOA. If you continue north, try Wild Horse Canyon slot on BLM lands near the Goblins Valley State Park south of Green River.

I drove to Willis Creek with muddy conditions in a Toyota Highlander. Certainly, I met other hikers with low-clearance and without AWD. However, if the weather has been wet during the past couple of weeks, you take a chance of losing traction. The road is narrow, with water diversion gullies and no bridges or culverts. Conditions can be a bit risky. I was lost on my first attempt because a local told me to turn at the first road on the right: the correct road was second. I met fellow hikers in a low-clearance vehicle and paired-up with them to the trailhead, a smart move if you can caravan with another vehicle. The red clay road is a long hike out if you get into trouble. The little slot canyon is not such a great reward that you should take a big risk. You must climb significantly on the road, so be cautious. Be sure to pack plenty of water.
Q:
Is a dog on a leash permitted?
A:
Yes. And you’re going to love this little stroll through a really pretty slot canyon.
Q:
Is spring a bad season to visit. I am guessing that it is unsafe with all the rains, especially this year?
A:
Getting very little rain and snow this year, though it's happening in other parts of Utah. Trails in the area you're interested in are quite dry. Even when it does rain, it dries out quickly anyway.
Q:
Hiking Willis Creek, is it better to wear boots or Keen-type water shoes?
A:
I wore my running shoes and was able to avoid the puddles and creek. My husband just walked through the creek with his runners on. Easy walking so Keens should be OK. Lots of …
