The lights are the most active and visible in the winter, but travelling in January and February can be impractical if you don't already have the winter gear needed. Friends of mine came up mid- to end-September and were able to see the lights really well. It's still warm enough then that you don't have to worry about bringing/ buying the right winter equipment. March is usually a little warmer as well, and during that time you can also see the ice castle and the Snow King events.
