Five days after a huge fire at one of the world’s largest battery storage plants in Moss Landing, Gov. Gavin Newsom has called for an investigation into the blaze, which has jolted California’s renewable energy industry.

A state lawmaker and a Monterey County supervisor are calling for the Vistra Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility to remain closed until an independent investigation can determine the cause of last week’s fire.

Vistra planned to build a 600-megawatt battery energy storage facility at the retired Morro Bay Power Plant property — but Assemblymember Dawn Addis called for an end to the project after the Moss Landing fire. “We can never have a disaster like this again,” she said in a statement Monday.

Probably the only reasonable response to such a speech.

The dramatic fire at the the Vistra battery storage plant, one of the world’s largest, caused the evacuation of 1,200 people in Northern Monterey County, closed Highway 1 and sent large clouds of toxic black smoke billowing from at one of the world’s largest battery storage plants.

Monterey County supervisors hold a special meeting to address the Moss Landing battery plant fire and consider declaring a state of emergency.

The announcement, which has been widely expected ever since Trump won the Nov. 5 presidential election, drew criticism from other Paris signatories and environmental groups as well as statements of continued support by states,

Vistra (NYSE:VST) closed +8.5% to an all-time high $188.77 on Tuesday, surging to the top of the day's S&P 500 leaderboard, after authorities lifted evacuation orders issued following last week's massive fire at the company's Moss Landing power plant in California.
