NEW YORK (AP) — New York City is allowing the robotaxi company Waymo to test a few of its autonomous vehicles in Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn, officials said Friday as the technology picks up in popularity in other metro areas.
Waymo will be permitted to test autonomous vehicles in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn until late September, the city says.
The self-driving car company received a permit to begin testing a limited number of autonomous vehicles in parts of Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn.
Waymo secured a permit from New York City on Friday to test its autonomous vehicles on the city’s streets, days after New Yorkers reported spotting some of Waymo’s distinctive cars driving around Manhattan, though the vehicles had human drivers.
