The Royal Canadian Navy has identified the victim of last week's tragedy, saying Petty Officer Second Class Gregory Applin was a 19-year veteran of the force.

Commodore Jacob French, commander of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, told reporters in a news conference on Monday that Petty Officer 2nd Class Gregory Applin was a crew member of HMCS Montreal.

The Navy says two sailors were operating a rigid-hull inflatable boat in the Halifax-area bay when it overturned and capsized around 10 p.m. on Friday.

The rigid-hull inflatable, known in the Royal Canadian Navy as a RHIB, overturned around 10 p.m. as it was returning to a boat shed after ferrying sea trial staff from HMCS Montreal to the Mill Cove Jetty, about a mile away. The frigate was moored in the Bedford Basin at the northern end of Halifax Harbour to test its sonar equipment.

Members of the Royal Canadian Navy say the sailor who died after the inflatable boat he was on capsized was HMCS Montreal member Gregory Attwood.
