In Philadelphia — a city that saw Ferguson Jenkins and Sergei Bobrovsky climb to fame after they were traded — Sandberg will be remembered as the most painful departure of them all.

Hall-of-Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg has died at age 65 after a battle with cancer. Sandberg made his major league debut for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981, but he played the next 15 seasons for his beloved Chicago Cubs.

Sandberg, a 10-time All-Star who was the National League MVP in 1984, announced that he had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer on Jan. 22, 2024.
