The U.S. Senate voted on Tuesday night 51-47 along party lines to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee, Susan Monarez, as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, charged with leading the response to threats against public health.

Dr. Monarez, who has been the acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since President Trump took office, was the president’s second pick for the job.

Susan Monarez is the first director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to require Senate confirmation. She's also the first director without a medical degree in more than 70 years.
