SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Ippei Mizuhara was sentenced Thursday to nearly five years in prison for stealing about $17 million from Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani to repay gambling debts.
US media outlets report that US authorities have launched an investigation into Mizuhara Ippei, Japanese baseball superstar Ohtani Shohei's interpreter, over suspicion of illegal gambling.
In March 2024, his former translator, Ippei Mizuhara, admitted to the team that he had a gambling addiction. He was then subsequently fired and was replaced by Will Ireton as interpreter.
