A lucky lottery player in New York state recently scored $50,000 with a third-prize Powerball ticket. The New York Lottery announced the winning ticket for the Jan. 1 drawing matched four white balls and the red Powerball. It was sold at Myrtle Convenience Deli, located at 6815 Myrtle Ave., in Ridgewood, New York.

A Powerball player kicked off the new year with a huge Powerball win in North Carolina. The player bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the Jan. 1 drawing, making it worth $1 million, results show. The winning numbers: white balls 6-12-28-35-66, with red Powerball 26.

The lottery jackpot was an estimated $163 million with a cash option of $73.9 million for Monday night's drawing, according to the Powerball website. The jackpot was last won on Dec. 7 when a New York lottery player won a $256 million Powerball jackpot.

A Powerball player in California missed out on the $163 million jackpot but still won $29,466, lottery officials said. The ticket in the Dec. 30 drawing matched four winning Powerball numbers plus the Powerball, according to the California Lottery.

The Powerball jackpot increased again after it remained unclaimed, but one lucky person won a couple million on Christmas.
