U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner of Houston, who died this month just weeks into his first term in Congress, was scheduled to lie in state at Houston City Hall on Tuesday in the first of several public events honoring the former Democratic lawmaker.

Turner, who most recently served as a United States Congressman, died last week at age 70 from enduring health complications. What he left behind was a lasting mark on the state’s largest municipality and a legacy as a Texas lawmaker who consistently pushed boundaries.

Texans are honoring U.S. Congressman Sylvester Turner on Thursday at the Texas State Capitol, where his body will lie in honor until noon on Friday, allowing the public to pay their respects to the former Houston mayor and state legislator.
