Powerball jumped to $163 million for Monday, Dec. 30, 2024, just before New Year’s Eve. Mega Millions was at $1.22 billion days earlier

The Powerball jackpot increased again after it remained unclaimed, but one lucky person won a couple million on Christmas.

A lucky lottery player in New York state recently scored $50,000 with a third-prize Powerball ticket. The New York Lottery announced the winning ticket for the Jan. 1 drawing matched four white balls and the red Powerball. It was sold at Myrtle Convenience Deli, located at 6815 Myrtle Ave., in Ridgewood, New York.

Two Powerball tickets sold in Arizona and North Carolina won $1 million each, but just missed the $181 million jackpot, lottery officials say. The tickets matched five winning Powerball numbers, but not the Powerball, in the drawing Wednesday, Jan. 1, the national Powerball site said.

Prizes vary from $4 for the matching the Powerball to $1 million for matching all five white balls (except in California) to the jackpot for matching all six balls. You can check all the prize payouts on the Powerball website here. You can play the game in 45 states plus the Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The winning numbers for the December 28 drawing were 6, 31, 51, 54, 55, with a Powerball of 12.

Powerball jackpot will be worth an estimated $178 million after zero players matched all six numbers during the $166 million drawing Monday (December 30) night.
