The Internal Revenue Service, IRS, will mail checks worth up to $1,400 to taxpayers who did not claim their stimulus checks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Around one million U.S. taxpayers who were eligible for the check can expect a lump sum mailed to them during tax season.

Approximately 1 million taxpayers will automatically receive special stimulus payments of up to $1,400 from the IRS via direct deposit or check by late January 2025.

For taxpayers who never received a stimulus check, your pockets will be a bit heavier going into the new year. The Internal Revenue Service announced on Dec. 20 its plans to issue an additional Economic Impact Payment,

Over the next month, 1 million people receive money from the Internal Revenue Service. The payments are to deliver money left unclaimed from the economic stimulus payments made by the federal government in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of about $2.4 billion will be sent out automatically to taxpayers who did not claim the recovery rebate credit on their 2021 tax returns. The maximum payment to any one individual will be $1,400, though payments will vary “depending on several factors,” the IRS said.

The Recovery Rebate Credit is a refundable credit for individuals who missed one or more Economic Impact Payments (EIP), or stimulus checks.
