The Supreme Court agreed Monday to take up a First Amendment appeal from a faith-based nonprofit that runs five “crisis pregnancy centers” in New Jersey and that is fighting a subpoena from the state’s Democratic attorney general.

The justices will weigh whether First Choice Women’s Resource Centers Inc. can go to federal court to fight a state-level subpoena seeking names of its donors.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case nearly three years after overturning abortion as a nationwide right. Since then, most Republican-controlled states have started enforcing new bans or restrictions, and most Democrat-dominated ones have sought to protect abortion access.
