South Korean authorities will increase their scrutiny of the country's low-cost airline sector, including tightening the criteria for MRO workers and enforcing stricter rules on network expansion.

South Korea plans to strengthen its oversight of low-cost carriers (LCCs) and impose strict penalties on airlines failing to meet enhanced operational safety standards, the government said Thursday, following last month's Jeju Air crash.

Following the deadly Jeju Air accident, the government ordered low cost carriers to reduce flight times, boost pilot training and expand maintenance crews.
