Supermarket chain Kroger is banning Visa credit cards at its Foods Co. stores in California starting Aug. 14 and may expand the ban beyond those stores.

Updates made in 2023 to the $0-annual-fee card, issued by U.S. Bank, have beefed up the rewards it can earn on spending with Kroger brands, making it a strong choice for loyalists.

Kroger's move to stop accepting Visa credit cards at some of its California stores could lead to lower prices but also cause shoppers in search of convenience to shop elsewhere.

Kroger stores in Greater Cincinnati, including Northern Kentucky and Dayton, are back online and able to accept credit cards, a Kroger official confirmed just after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
