Badlands director Dan Trachtenberg showed off the first 15 minutes of his movie and made surprising connections to the Alien franchise and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch.

Timeline-wise, it jumps way back. Each story sits in its historical pocket, way before almost all the other Predator or Alien movies. These are the oldest Predator hunts we’ve seen—unless you count Prey from 1719, which barely squeaks in earlier.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has returned to the Predator movie franchise after almost 40 years. The Hollywood star, who can currently be seen in Netflix show FUBAR, appeared in the 1987 original, which spawned five follow ups as well as spin-off franchise Alien vs Predator.

Predator: Badlands centers on Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), a young-and-hungry Yautja warrior who is the runt of the litter in his clan and has a whole lot to prove. He teams up with an unlikely ally: Thia ( Elle Fanning ), a synthetic made by the Weyland-Yutani company (from the Alien franchise).

The astonishingly po-faced approach to such a ridiculous concept was directed by the soon-to-be mighty John McTiernan, the movie he made before Die Hard (and just 16 years before his career would collapse in a heap of abysmal flops,

Star Wars, however, wasn’t the only inspiration. In prior interviews Trachtenberg has mentioned masterpiece Shadow of the Colossus as inspiring Predator: Badlands, but it turns out there are many other games that factored into the film’s companion mechanic, including Half-Life 2, Uncharted, and God of War.
