Goma remains “under occupation” by Congo’s M23 rebels and the ceasefire they announced has been broken as their forces engage in heavy fighting along the main route to South Kivu’s main city Bukavu.

After taking control of Goma, the M23 rebels – backed by Rwanda – now want to advance further into South Kivu. But as they edge closer to Burundi, the war risks dragging in more neighbours.
