A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern tip of South America, in the Drake Passage, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports, striking at the shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Chile has also issued a tsunami threat advisory.

The event comes just weeks after a powerful earthquake in Russia’s Far East triggered a tsunami that rippled across the Pacific and raised alerts from Japan to the US and Canada and New Zealand.
