In March 2025 we have a fine opportunity to view the planet that many astronomy guide books refer to as the most difficult of the naked-eye planets to see: Mercury.

Seven planets are on display in the night sky at the end of February, but some will be harder to spot than others. Here’s what you need to know to catch a glimpse.

The solar system's planets are set to align in the night sky in a dazzling planetary alignment, colloquially known as a planetary parade, on Friday night.

For example, you’ll need binoculars or a small telescope to see Uranus and Neptune—so, while the seven planets will be there, spotting them all will require specific equipment. Several of them will only appear low on the western horizon around twilight, but three will be bright and high in the sky after sunset.

Whenever planets are visible in the night sky, they always appear roughly along the same line. This path, known as the ecliptic, is the same one that the sun travels along during the year.

The seven other planets in our solar system can be seen in the sky at once through Friday, forming a planet parade. But two require a telescope to view.

This phenomenon known as a "planet parade," will feature Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all present at the same time along a line in the night sky on Friday, NASA says.
