Progressive state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani has won New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, NBC News projects, marking a stunning rise by the 33-year-old democratic socialist over powerful former Gov.

Politics aside, his victory is historic. If elected in November, Mamdani would become the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City. There are currently four members of Congress who are Muslim and 32 who are Jewish, according to Pew.

Mr. Mamdani’s victory upended city politics and reverberated nationally. He relied on a memorable message, charisma and a strong ground game.
