About 500 people participated in the protest at its peak, according to a DPS estimate. Just after 1 p.m., the protesters began to march down Congress Avenue and around several downtown Austin blocks before heading back to the Capitol steps about an hour later,

The demonstration is part of a national protest against the conservative plan to enact sweeping change within the federal government. The Texas House and Senate are also in session Wednesday.
