A flash flood is a rapid rise of water along a stream or in a low-lying urban area, the weather service said. Flash flooding can result from slow-moving thunderstorms, from numerous thunderstorms that develop repeatedly over the same area, or from heavy rains associated with tropical cyclones.
Shortly after the largest wildfire in New Mexico history, a flash flood in July 2022 sent water raging through burn-scarred Tecolote Creek in rural San Miguel County. A Texas family making an annual summer trip to their cabin in northern New Mexico attempted to flee in a vehicle but were swept away and killed.
Texas lawmakers’ inaction on flood prevention often hits rural and economically disadvantaged communities the hardest, experts said.
The warning was in place for Lincoln County. "Flood waters continue to recede. A Flood Advisory remains in effect. Please continue to heed remaining road closures," according to the NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC. The warning is in effect until 11:45 p.m.
Wireless Emergency Alerts are limited to flash flood warnings when there is a "threat tag" of considerable or catastrophic.
The NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA released a flash flood warning at 2:47 p.m. on Friday in effect until 6 p.m. for Los Angeles.
At 8:01 p.m. on Friday, the NWS Morristown TN released a flash flood warning in effect until 11 p.m. for Clay County.
