The South African rand strengthened on Friday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he planned to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries taxing U.S. imports, and as investors awaited a domestic budget next week.

South African markets got off to a rocky start this week after President Donald Trump froze all US aid to South Africa over what he falsely claimed were rights violations stemming from a new land-expropriation law.

South Africa is one of the latest countries President Trump has targeted since taking office. Last week, the White House issued an executive order completely cutting off financial assistance to the country.
