Japanese automaker Nissan said it will shutter 7 plants and cut thousands of additional jobs in a second round of job cuts after millions of dollars in profit losses last year.

Nissan’s recovery plan also aims to cut operating costs by $3.4 billion by aligning production with global demand and strengthening strategic alliances, such as its partnerships with Renault in Europe and Dongfeng in China.

The new layoffs will bring Nissan's total workforce cuts to about 20,000 jobs. Last year, the automaker announced plans to cut 9,000 workers and previously announced nixing plans to build a plant in Japan.
