Multiple parts of Central Texas, including Kerr County, were shocked by flash floods Friday when the Guadalupe River and others rose rapidly.

At Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp in Hunt, Texas, where officials are grieving the loss of 27 children and counselors, belongings of the young campers were strewn about the flooded floors of a dormitory, while other items, including a pink backpack and a Camp Mystic T-shirt, were found along the bloated Guadalupe River, photos show.

Texas’ first special session of 2025 starts Monday, during which state lawmakers will consider new congressional maps approve the proposal.

FEMA’s maps are essential tools for identifying flood risks, but they have significant gaps that limit their effectiveness.

A flood watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding, according to the National Weather Service. It doesn't guarantee flooding will occur, but it means flooding is possible. Areas north of Dallas to the Red River will remain under flood watch until 7 a.m., according to the NWS in Fort Worth.

With few options to prevent the Republican majority from passing a new congressional map, Democrats threatened to filibuster, delay hearings and even break quorum.

The groups also want lawmakers to examine land-use practices and consider ways to protect natural resources, which they say will in turn help protect lives.
