After earthquakes centered in New Jersey rattled parts the NYC area twice in less than two weeks, a seismologist says it's unlikely a sign of things to come.

A 3.0 earthquake hit New Jersey on Saturday, Aug. 2, according to the USGS. It was felt as far away as NYC and recorded about 10 miles deep.

An earthquake rocked New Jersey late Saturday night — luckily, though, fairly softly. It was reported to be a magnitude 3 quake, generally considered to be a minor, “low energy event” that would not be extremely noticeable or cause extensive damage.
