The National Hurricane Center (NHC) designated Potential Tropical Cyclone Five-E in the Eastern Pacific Ocean on Monday, with the forecast calling for the system to eventually become Hurricane Erick.
Tropical Storm Erick formed early Tuesday near southern Mexico in the Pacific Ocean and is expected to become a hurricane on Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Scientists have warned that Erick could become the most intense hurricane along the coast this early in the season.

Unrelated to the tropical storms, much of the U.S. Midwest and East faced rounds of severe thunderstorms packing strong winds and hail and raising flooding concerns Sunday and Monday. AccuWeather meteorologists said hot and humid air will clash with an advancing cool air boundary into early week causing thunderstorms to erupt, some of them severe.
