Growing pains are aching or throbbing pains that usually occur in a child’s legs or less commonly in the arms. They are most common in children between ages 2 and 12, often starting between 3 and 5 years of age. Despite the name, there is no evidence that they are linked to growth spurts. The cause of growing pains is unknown, but factors such as vitamin D deficiency, problems with posture and gait, and increased pain sensitivity may play a role.
