Actually it's not a bad comparison. A jet engine and piston engine are pretty much the same. Making a piston engine with very high exhaust velocity would be easy enough, but you'd still need a huge engine to drive the car with the exhaust. Much more efficient to extract the energy mechanically and use it to drive a more efficient propulsion system.
