    The three main types of skin cancer are basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer and melanoma. Basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers are very common. They rarely spread, can most often be completely removed in one sitting, and in general have an excellent prognosis. The prognosis for melanoma varies. Melanomas on the upper skin's surface only usually can be cured. Deeper melanomas are more likely to spread and more challenging to treat.
